3 Surprisingly Normal Rex Rat Health Symptoms

Rex rats do not usually outwardly indicate they are suffering from health problems, even when dealing with serious symptoms. In fact, rats with large tumors or other distressing symptoms will run around normally until they physically cannot move. Luckily, you can perform a full examination of your pet on a daily basis to spot symptoms that may signal the need for a vet appointment. During the close examinations, you might even see initially concerning signs that are not actually a symptom of bigger problem. Here are three interesting issues that do not usually require a vet visit.

Hair Loss

Despite their incredibly cute looks, you should not fall in love with the curly fur coat on your Rex rat, as most of these critters start to lose patches of fur after their first year. Rexes born with two copies of the curly haired gene will even go completely bald with a quickness.

The hair loss is due to a lack of protective keratin in the fur. You do not need to worry about nutritional deficiencies or manual removal of the fur, as is the case with many other creatures that start to go bald. Instead, watch your rats for signs of skin irritation, such as redness or sores that do not heal quickly.

Hiccups

At first, you may mistake hiccups for small tremors or spasms. Upon closer look, you will surely spot the rhythmic nature of constant hiccups. Like people, Rex rats may develop hiccups for no reason or as a result of a bit of gastric distress.

In most cases, the hiccups quickly disappear and leave your rats no worse for the wear. If the hiccups happen often, you can try to change your rat’s diet or schedule an appointment with the vet. In rare cases, frequent bouts of hiccups can signal respiratory problems that can be cleared up with nebulizer treatments or antibiotics.

Red Discharge

One day, you might notice red discharge coming from the corners of the eyes and beneath the nose of your Rex rats. If so, do not panic. The red discharge is not likely blood, but rather porphyrin secretions. These secretions provide lubricant to the eyes and nose to keep them in good health.

A notable increase in the frequency or amount of the secretions, however, may signal a need for a cage clean or environment change. Of course, if you’re worried, you can have your Rexes’ vet perform an evaluation and discuss the findings.

Seeking Veterinary Assistance

Anytime you spot symptoms that give you cause for concern, make an appointment with the vet to have your Rexes examined and possibly treated. The vet will know if the symptoms are a part of natural development or sign of a health problem. You will learn important disease process signs to watch for during your visits with the vet. Regularly scheduled examinations can give you reassurance about the health status of your pets and even allow for early diagnosis of treatable conditions.
